Dare to Sports Federations: Nigerians wants medals

Minister of Youth and Sports Development Sunday Dare has warned the Sports Federation Presidents to immediately commence preparations for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as the ministry will not accommodate federations that cannot guarantee any medal at the games.

Dare also directed sports secretaries and presidents within 10 days to review their programmes in view of the just concluded All Africa Games in Morocco to enable the ministry to take necessary action towards their preparations for the games

” I have directed federations to start immediate training of their athletes in both on and off-season. To win medal/s athletes must be in constant training and also attend international meets to properly be in shape. Athletes picked for the games must be the one that will assure the podium finish. Nigerians want medals not failures or stories at the end of the games in Tokyo, ” said the Minister.

The Minister pointed out the late preparations are the major problem facing athletes in any championship both continental and international tournaments, saying that the Secretaries of federations are expected to key into the new thinking of the ministry towards addressing the challenges identified for not doing well at international meets.
