Dessers’ Cremonese relegated as Lecce, Spezia, Verona head for play-off

Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers and his Cremonese teammates are now mathematically relegated from Seria A along with Sampdoria, so it is between Lecce, Spezia and Verona for the final ticket to Serie B and there could be a play-off.

It was already clear the Grigiorossi were doomed after yesterday’s 5-1 home defeat to Bologna and that was confirmed by the statistics with Lecce and Spezia drawing 0-0 at the Stadio Via del Mare.

That means Cremonese and Sampdoria are relegated to Serie B, while Salernitana are now safe.

There are three teams who still risk the final slide down to the second division, as Lecce are on 33 points, Spezia have 31 and Verona 30.

Lecce have the advantage, but very little considering they have scraped only eight points in the last nine rounds.

Today’s draw does mean that Lecce retain a better head-to-head record with Spezia, but an inferior one to Verona.

Spezia have the superior head-to-head record with Verona.

However, this season that doesn’t matter as much, because the rule was changed so if two teams finish level on points straddling the relegation zone, they will face off in a 90-minute play-off.

If three or more teams are level on points, then a mini-table will be drawn up of their head-to-head record, leaving the bottom two to enter the play-off.
