Dessers, Onuachu receive baptism of fire in Belgium league opener

Nigeria’s duo of Cyriel Dessers and Paul Onuachu received the baptism of fire as their club, Genk opened the Belgium league with a draw at Standard Liege.

At the keenly contested duel, Onuachu missed some big chances on the opening day of league action.

Transfer-target Onuachu started the game, while Dessers replaced his fellow Super Eagles striker in the 62nd minute for Genk.

Home team Standard took the lead in the 69th minute before Genk salvaged a point in stoppage time thanks to Dessers assist.

An excited Dessers spoke after the first game of the new season: “We played well in the first period, but you let Standard live by missing those opportunities.

“After the break, you see that they can also play very well, and then it becomes difficult.

“I didn’t get to the ball much in the first 15 minutes of my substitute, but after that, it got better and better. I went a little lower to get the ball and I am also very happy with my decisive assist. I can build on this again.”

Onuachu has failed to score in Genk’s two official games thus far – the Belgium Super Cup and now the league opener.
