D’Tigress open FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title defence with win

Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, got its FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title defence tournament off to a winning start after a 69-35 victory against the Democratic Republic of Congo on Friday, at the BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda.

D’Tigress were ahead by 16-8 in the first quarter and the lead was extended to 29-18 at halftime. In the third quarter, Nigeria were leading by 46-32 and blew their Congolese opponents away in the fourth, securing a 34-point victory.

Despite struggling to get their chemistry together, the Nigerian ladies won all four quarters in a thrilling encounter. Elizabeth Balogun and Ifunaya Okoro led with 11 points each, while Tomi Taiwo and Sarah Ogoke contributed 10 points each in the contest.

The Rena Wakama-led D’Tigress showed great determination as they turned on the style to get their FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title defence off to a great start.

Nigeria has won the last three editions of the tournament and are seeking to become the first team since Senegal to win four consecutive titles.

D’Tigress of Nigeria will now face Egypt in their second game in the competition.
