Eagles relishing chances of lifting Nations cup in Cameroon

Even with last minute shake-up in the technical crew composition, Super Eagles players believe they stand a good chance of lifting the forth coming Nations cup in Cameroon. Media officer of the team Babafemi Raji in a chat with TVC Sports revealed that the players have been discussing it and x-raying their chances even as some believe that Cameroon should be a fertile ground for Nigeria to lift the continental diadem for the fourth time.

Nigeria has won the Nations cup three times 1980, 1994 and 2013. The country has made 19 appearances at the Nations cup with the first appearances recorded in 1963 in Ghana.

“The players believe they stand a good chance of lifting the cup. They have been discussing it among themselves and believe it is not impossible to go beyond the third place finish and win the final in Cameroon” he said.

The Eagles finished third at the 2019 edition in Egypt after beating Tunisia by a lone goal. Nigeria’s dream of playing in the final of that edition hit the rocks after eventual winners Algeria edged out Nigeria 2-1 in the semifinal at the Cairo international Stadium.

German tactician Gernot Rohr who some say was in a super good book of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) was sacked recently with former international and Austin (Cerezo) Eguavoen appointed to lead the Eagles to the Nations cup which kicks off in Cameroon on January 9.

The Eagles camp is expected to open December 27 in Abuja with final squad ahead of the Championship expected to be announced before January 4th.

The Eagles have been drawn in Group D against Egypt, Sudan and Guinea Bissau. Some analysts say Eagles must avoid losing the first match against Pharaohs of Egypt on the 11th of January if they hope to reduce pressure in the quest to advance from the group.
