Egypt set to exit World Cup, lose 3-1 to Russia

Egypt on Tuesday lost their second group game 3-1 to Russia at the ongoing world cup and look set to be the first of the five African countries on parade to exit the competition.

The pharaohs had prior to the match been tipped to bounce back after losing their first match in the opener against Uruguay with star player Mohammed Salah sidelined due to injury.

The return of Salah for the second match however fired up Egypt and raised a lot of hope that the Pharaohs will turn the table.

Rampaging Russia playing in front of their vociferous crowd however made it impossible for Egypt to achieve their dream.

An own goal Ahmed Fathy in the 47th minute opened the flood gae of goal for Russia. Denis Cheryshev increased the tally n the 59th minute with the third goal coming of the boot of Artem Dzyuba

A 73rd minute penalty converted by Salah however handed Egypt their consolation goal which unfortunately was incapable of changing anything. All efforts by the Héctor Cúper tutored Pharaohs’ to change the scenario in the remaining part of the match proved abortive. The pharaohs are now left with last goup match against Saudi Arabia on June 25 at the Volgograde.

Russia’s victory means Egypt will be dumped out of the tournament unless Saudi Arabia avoid defeat against Uruguay on Wednesday afternoon.

Russia had in the first match handed Saudi Arabia a 5-0 defeat in the world cup opener on June 14.
