Emiliano Martinez’s exploits in Qatar tickles Wenger

Arsene Wenger has heaped praise upon former Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez for his performances between the sticks at World Cup 2022, where he’s reached the final with Argentina.

Wenger was still manager for Martinez’s first six years with the Gunners and handed him his debut in a League Cup tie against Coventry City in 2012.

Martinez never established himself as number one in North London  ultimately joining Aston Villa in 2020 after a string of loan spells in the lower leagues – but Wenger has been delighted with how his one-time protege has come along.

Speaking to the Mirror about the 30-year-olds exploits in Qatar where Argentina face France in Sunday’s final as they chase their third World Cup the iconic ex-Arsenal boss said:

“I am very happy for him. We were aware of his huge qualities. He was determined and had a desire to learn and a big passion for the game.

“Sometimes, he went out on loan and didn’t even play  but it didn’t stop his belief and motivation. When I see him now play knowing what he went through, I admire even more his achievement. Well done, Emi; we [Arsenal] are proud of you.”

Martinez only made his Argentina debut last year but has firmly established himself as first choice in goal for the Albiceleste.

Arguably the highlight of his tournament so far came in the quarter-finals against the Netherlands, when he saved two penalties as Argentina advanced via a shootout.
