England coach urges Lingard to quit Man Utd

England manager, Gareth Southgate, has advised Jesse Lingard to leave Manchester United for regular first-team football.

Lingard is involved in England’s squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers in September.

However, Southgate reiterated that Lingard would have a much tougher time getting into future squads if he is not a regular at the club level.

Asked for his view on Lingard’s future, Southgate said: “I think there’s always what’s ideal and what’s ideal is players play at a highest possible level as regularly as they can but there are so many nuances to that.

“Sometimes we’re criticised for not being consistent. Sometimes it depends on an individual and an individual’s circumstance. We know players who can play at the level.

“You’ve got a better chance if you’re playing at the highest level regularly and if you’re playing a lot.

“If you’re Manchester United, you’ve got an asset in Jesse they’ll want involved in the squad at this moment in time.

“He had a great second half of the season with West Ham that revitalised him and that’s why he was so close to our squad in the summer.”
