Epic ‘September to remember’ showdowns

Football’s Greatest Season continues on SuperSport with more thrills and spills expected in the month of September with Champions League, Premier League, LaLiga, Europa League, Serie A and DStv Premiership.

Erling Haaland and Robert Lewandowski return to Germany to face their former teams in Europe’s elite club competition while the Premier League also has some epic showdowns with Tottenham Hotspur looking to prove their doubters wrong.

Gavin Hunt would have a score to settle against his former paymaster while Arthur Zwane will be looking for a win against SuperSport to ease some pressure on himself after a mixed start to his tenure as the head coach of Chiefs.

PSG V JUVENTUS

Paris Saint-Germain have never beaten Juventus in eight previous competitive meetings (D2 L6), losing their last six in a row. This is the most they’ve faced any side in all European competitions without ever winning, although they haven’t faced the Italian club since the 1996 Uefa Super Cup, losing 9-2 on aggregate over two legs. The Old Lady of Turin lost just one of their last 10 major European meetings with French sides (W7 D2), although that was their last such away game, going down 0-1 at Lyon in February 2020.

INTER MILAN V BAYERN MUNICH

Internazionale and Bayern Munich have met on seven previous occasions in European competition, with both sides sharing three victories apiece (D1). One of Internazionale’s three victories against the German side came in the final of the Uefa Champions League in 2009-10 (2-0). Bayern Munich have a 100 per cent away record against Internazionale in European competition (3/3), with each of their three total victories against them coming on the road. The most recent of those was a 1-0 win in the Last 16 of the Uefa Champions League back in 2010-11.

MANCHESTER UNITED V REAL SOCIEDAD

Manchester United are starting their Europa League campaign as they take on Spanish side Real Sociedad at Old Trafford on Thursday. After winning four matches on the bounce and recently defeating Arsenal on Sunday afternoon, Erik ten Hag will be looking to capitalise on this good form to make a good start to the European competition. Sociedad has two wins, a draw, and a loss in the four opening LaLiga rounds.

MANCHESTER CITY V TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

This is a battle between the Premier League’s only two unbeaten teams so far this season at Etihad Stadium. Pep Guardiola’s charges are second on the table after six matches with four wins and two draws, while Spurs are third on the table also with four wins and two draws after the same amount of matches. In their respective six matches, City have scored 20 goals and conceded six while Spurs have found the back of the net 12 times and conceded five.

Currently, Manchester City rank second, while Tottenham Hotspur hold third position.

BAYERN MUNICH V BARCELONA

Barcelona moved up to second in LaLiga after maintaining their unbeaten start to the season with victory at Sevilla. Thomas Mueller became the second player on Bayern’s all-time appearance list with his 633rd game in all competitions when he came on as a substitute in their 1-1 draw with Union Berlin. Mueller, who has won more league titles than any other player in Germany will look to inspire Bayern at home against Barca whose attack is led by the Bavarians’ former striker Robert Lewandowski who already has five goals in four matches.

MANCHESTER CITY V BORUSSIA DORTMUND

When the Champions League draw was done and grouped Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund, that match-up immediately became one of the group stage’s most anticipated matches. That’s because it will be Erling Haaland’s return to BVB after he left for the English champions. With Haaland last season, Dortmund came in second in the Bundesliga, eight points behind Bayern Munich and five points ahead of Bayern Leverkusen. Haaland has already hit the ground running in England with 10 goals after six rounds of matches

ARSENAL V PSV

Arsenal are in Group A of the Europa League alongside PSV Eindhoven, Bodo/Glimt and FC Zurich. Mikel Arteta’s side, who began their domestic season like a house on fire winning their opening five matches, will begin their Europa campaign with a match against PSV. The Dutch side has been champions of Holland 24 times and finished just two points behind Ajax last season. This promises to another mouth-watering match of September to Remember!

KAIZER CHIEFS V SUPERSPORT UNITED

After poor start to their season SuperSport United’s confidence levels have shot up after defeating defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns and now they will face coach Gavin Hunt’s former paymasters Kaizer Chiefs who have also had a mixed start to their season. After six rounds of matches Chiefs have only managed two wins, three losses and one draw while Matsantsantsa also have managed two wins, two draws and two losses in their opening batch of six games. This one promises to be an explosive encounter as United look to consolidate while Chiefs are seeking redemption.
