Ex-Tottenham star Jan Vertonghen vomits on pitch

Jan Vertonghen gave football fans a nasty surprise when the camera zoomed in on him early in the second half of Benfica’s clash against Porto on Thursday.

The former Tottenham man was caught bending over and vomiting onto the pitch, before casually continuing to get stuck into the action.

Vertonghen’s incident came five minutes into the second half of the clash between bitter Portuguese rivals Benfica and Porto.

But the 34-year-old still managed to complete the whole 90 minutes, despite his unfortunate mishap.

Vertonghen’s bravery failed to pay off though as Benfica went on to be beaten 3-1, losing ground on league leaders Porto in the Primeira Liga title race.

And he won’t be thanking the cameraman after the incredibly close-up shot of him emptying his insides onto the pitch.

Although it’s not the first time the defender has been physically sick while in action.

He previously vomited on the pitch after being pushed to the limit in extreme heat during a 2014 World Cup game for Belgium in Brazil.

Vertonghen is into his second season with Portuguese outfit Benfica, having left Spurs in the summer of 2020 upon the expiry of his contract.

He’s established himself as a key figure at the club, starting all but two league games this campaign and every Champions League group stage outing.

Vertonghen helped Benfica progress to the last sixteen of the Champions League in a group that included both Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

A home victory against Barca and a point at the Nou Camp saw Benfica progress in second place behind Bayern, at the expense of the Spaniards.

It’s the first time the La Liga giants have been eliminated from the Champions League group stages since the year 2000.

And Vertonghen will be hoping he can avoid another vomiting incident when he comes up against former club Ajax in the last sixteen.

He played over 200 times for the Dutch outfit before joining Spurs in 2012.
