FA Cup: Man United through to fourth round as Rashford limps off

Manchester United progressed to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 win over Wolves but they had cause for concern as Marcus Rashford limped off in the second half.

Juan Mata’s goal was enough to give the Red Devils the victory over Wolves at Old Trafford in their third round replay.

Juan Mata scored for Manchester United against Wolves

Wolves were almost gifted the lead after 10 minutes when a poor pass from Fred bounced off Nemanja Matic and Raul Jimenez won a challenge with Harry Maguire.

Neto’s goal was chalked off for handball

But the ball hit Jimenez on the hand before it reached Pedro Neto who stroked it into the net. Following a VAR review referee Kevin Friend ruled out the goal.

Juan Mata and James both went close to breaking the deadlock and Matt Doherty hit the woodwork as the first half ended goalless at Old Trafford.

Mata saw Ruddy keep out his effort before Doherty’s header came back off the post. James had the best chance but hit his shot straight at Ruddy following a run into the area.

It was Mata who eventually found the breakthrough in the 67th minute to put Solskjaer’s side 1-0 up.

A long ball over the top caused chaos and Anthony Martial was able to play in the Spaniard who ran through on goal and chipped Ruddy.

There was a moment of concern for United late on when Marcus Rashford hobbled off less than 15 minutes after coming on.

In the other FA Cup replay, Nathan Thomas gave Carlisle the early lead in their third round tie at home to Cardiff.

But the visitors were soon 2-1 up with goals from Aden Flint and Josh Murphy.

Flint then added a second three minutes after the break but Carlisle were quick to hit back.

Harry McKirdy’s shot from six yards out found the back of the net to make it 3-2 but Danny Ward restored the two-goal advantage just minutes later.

The scoring was not finished there, though, as McKirdy got his second to make it seven goals in the game and 4-3 the scoreline.
