Filipinas now 44th in Fifa rankings after W/Cup show

 

The Philippines moved up to 44th in the latest women’s world rankings after the conclusion of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The ranking published on the Fifa website shows that the Philippines moved up two places from the previous tally published ahead of the world cup.

It also placed the Philippines as the sixth-best team in Asia and second in Southeast Asia, overtaking Thailand’s undying regional powerhouse.

Coach Alen Stajcic capped off his time in the Philippines by guiding the team to a commendable performance in New Zealand, highlighted by a stunning 1-0 victory against the co-hosts in the second game of the group stage.

But a 6-0 loss to Norway in Auckland ended any chance for the Philippines to slip through to the knockout stage.

Sweden became the new No.1 team in the standings, followed by Spain, who won the World Cup after beating England in the final on Sunday in Sydney, Australia, thanks to Olga Carmona’s goal in the first half time.

The United States slipped from first to third place after a shock loss to Sweden in the Round of 16, ending their quest for an unprecedented third consecutive World Cup.

Japan topped the Asian Football Confederation teams, dropping from 11th to eighth place at the expense of Australia, despite reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup.

Australia, which ultimately settled for fourth place after losing to Sweden in the consolation match, fell from 10th to 11th in the standings.

Vietnam, also coming off of their first appearance at the World Cup, remained Southeast Asia’s top nation even though they fell two places to 34th.
