Georgia Oboh misses cut at final qualifiers of British Open

After etching her name in the annals of history as the first Nigerian to compete in the final qualifying tournament for the prestigious Women’s British Open, Nigeria’s Georgia Oboh narrowly missed the cut to be part of the main event of the British Open.

In her bid to get a spot in the 11 spots available in the final qualifying tournament played at the Ashridge Golf Club, in Little Gaddesden, England, Oboh shot a level par score of 72 against a strong field of 108 lady professionals and top amateurs but came up 3 shots short.

The leading score was 7 under par at 65 and with 11 players making it to the main event from the filed of 108.

However, Oboh secured her place in history with the milestone appearance in the final qualifying tournament of British Open.

Spectators at the final qualifiers got a real treat watching the Edo State-born teenage sensation who only had one rain-drenched practice round on Sunday.

At the event, Oboh was supported by Lady Golfer Association of Nigeria (LGAN) by Ms Sila who made the trip from Manchester to support the famous Nigerian professional.

The LGAN member expressed her satisfaction with the performance of Oboh while charging well-meaning Nigerians and corporate bodies to support the youngster in her quest to continue to put Nigeria on global map.

The venue of the British Open, Woburn Golf Club has a rich affiliation with the event and professional golf tournaments having first hosted the Women’s British Open in 1984 and ten times since then, most recently in 2016 when Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn prevailed by three strokes on the critically acclaimed Marquess’ course.

As one of only two women majors played outside the US, the Women’s British Open is known to be the most international with 29 different nations represented in the 2018 line-up and 19 of the top 20 on the Rolex World Rankings headlining the field.
