Ghana striker scoops three big prizes during Palace awards night

Crystal Palace striker Jordan Ayew was recognised for a stellar campaign during the club’s end-of-season awards show on Tuesday.

The Ghanaian international enjoyed a strong year after completing a permanent move to Selhurst Park last summer following a season-long loan from Swansea City, scoring nine goals in 39 appearances across all competitions.

Ayew’s consistently impressive displays have now been recognised by fans and team-mates alike, with the former Aston Villa and Marseille frontman winning Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season for 2019/20.

He scooped the former award – voted for by supporters – by claiming 37 per cent of almost 6,000 total votes, finishing comfortably ahead of goalkeeper Vicente Guaita and veteran defender Gary Cahill, who enjoyed a fine first campaign in south London before injury struck.

If that was not quite enough, Ayew completed a treble of prizes by winning Palace’s Goal of the Season honour for his sensational late Boxing Day winner against London rivals West Ham.

“I’ve worked so hard to get into the team and I think the first season I came into this team wasn’t the best but the club had faith in me, the club wanted me to stay and I wanted to stay as well,” Ayew said.

“I had the desire to have a better season and things have gone so well. I’m just grateful.”

Palace boss Roy Hodgson added: “[Jordan] is an unbelievable enthusiast and hard worker, somebody really who never falls below a certain level of performance, someone who never misses a training session and is always lively and alert in each training session, irrespective if it’s the day after coming back after a long journey or after having a day or two off.

“He’s made great strides going forward. When he came to us, he showed a lot of qualities but I think the qualities he possesses he really has worked on and improved… Well done, Jordan.”
