Hazard in a race against time to be fit for Alaves clash

All eyes were on Eden Hazard as Real Madrid returned to training on Wednesday.

Zinedine Zidane had given his squad a day off following Sunday’s win over Athletic Club – a game Hazard didn’t play in.

According to Real Madrid, the forward completed part of training with his teammates and part on his own on Tuesday.

The Belgian’s participation in Friday’s match against Alaves at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano is still a doubt due to the persisting problems with his ankle.

On a physical level, the former Chelsea man feels good, with the pain left by the knock he suffered against Espanyol subsiding.

The problem Hazard has is that he doesn’t feel entirely comfortable when faced with the changes of pace, sprints and dribbles that his game consists of.

Los Blancos are set to hold two more training sessions on Wednesday and Thursday before Zinedine Zidane decides on his squad to play Alaves.

The Real Madrid boss won’t run any risks with his selection, especially taking into consideration Hazard’s ankle problems this season.

He spent over two months out with an ankle injury after suffering a knock from Belgium teammate Thomas Meunier during a Champions League match in November.

After returning against Celta Vigo in February, Hazard suffered a relapse of his ankle injury the following weekend at Levante.

The break in the season allowed him to get fit again for the restart of LaLiga Santander before the problems returned following the knock at Espanyol.

Hazard wants to help his team continue their push for the LaLiga Santander title, but he wants to do it full of confidence and at full fitness.

Elsewhere, Nacho Fernandez is continuing his recovery from a thigh injury he picked up at the start of June.

On Tuesday, the defender did work in the gym and an individual session out in the grass.

He almost certainly won’t be available for Friday’s game with Alaves.
