How Aguero ignored Messi’s ‘stop drinking’ request during World Cup celebrations

Former Argentina striker Sergio Aguero has revealed he shunned the advice of his friend Lionel Messi as they celebrated their nation’s World Cup victory in Qatar.

Despite being forced to retire in 2021 due to a heart problem, Aguero was present for the final and watched his friend and former team-mate help Argentina to a first World Cup since 1986. After the match, the Manchester City legend was seen amongst the celebrations on the pitch and in the changing room with the rest of the players.

Aguero has now revealed Messi actually got angry with him because of how much he was drinking and even told him to stop.

Speaking to TyC Sports, he explained: “I drank a lot but I didn’t eat. We were world champions. If something were to happen to me, let it be there. Leo [Messi] got angry and told me ‘stop’. How [do I] stop? We are world champions, so happy.”

Aguero was even asked to join the players on their flight back to Argentina, where they would continue the celebrations with fans in the capital city Buenos Aires.

He even considered making the journey before he remembered he had his son with him, adding: “The boys wanted to take me with them to Argentina. They told me to hurry up because the plane was leaving, saying ‘ Come on, come on. Let’s present the passport, everything.
