Rafael Leao and Noah Okafor returned after a month out, but Simon Kjaer, Pierre Kalulu, Malick Thiaw, Mattia Caldara, Marco Pellegrino and Marco Sportiello were still out, making Theo Hernandez a makeshift central defender. The Magpies had if anything an even bigger injury crisis, missing Sven Botman, Matt Targett, Harvey Barnes, Joe Willock, Jacob Murphy, Elliot Anderson, Mark Gillespie, Emil Krafth, Matt Ritchie, Javier Manquillo and goalkeeper Nick Pope, as well as suspended Sandro Tonali, but Dan Burn, Sean Longstaff and Callum Wilson were available again.

Fikayo Tomori made an extraordinary tackle to prevent the Miguel Almiron tap-in from a yard, in what was practically a goal-line clearance on the Joelinton roll across that had already beaten Mike Maignan.

Rafael Leao’s curler flashed across the face of goal, but Newcastle broke the deadlock with a ferocious hit from Joelinton into the far top corner from just inside the area. His first touch was poor, but he improvised to use the accidental flick up to thump it on the half-volley with his right foot.
