Nigeria fans have bombarded Super Eagles forward Odion Ighalo with insults and alleged death threats after the country’s exit from the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria fans have bombarded Super Eagles forward Odion Ighalo with insults and alleged death threats after the country’s exit from the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The fans who are yet to recover from the shock have continued to blame Ighalo for Nigeria’s failure to advance to the knockout stages of the World Cup in Russia.

Ighalo has been singled out for missing two clear goal opportunities that would have kept Nigeria’s hopes alive in Tuesday’s game against Argentina.

The player who has since apologised and even went as far as accepting the blame for the Eagles defeat had to speak out on his Instagram page to alert the public.

“ighalojude–Great experience to be at the World Cup and I enjoyed every moment of it👌🏾we did our best but sometimes things don’t always go the way you want but life has to go on. I’m grateful to God no injuries onto the next ✌🏾🙏🏾 for all those that want to kill me abeg na person pikin I be o it’s well😂😜🇳🇬🦅🙏🏾,” the player said.

Ighalo who plays his club football in China is not the only Nigeria player who has come under severe attack from fans.

Something similar had happened at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, when the duo of Super Eagles players Sani Kaita and Yakubu Aiyegbeni received anonymous threats from fans as a result of the country’s ouster in the group stage.
