International Friendly: Mali clip Super Eagles wings in Marrakech

Super Eagles failed to make it two wins in two outings in the double header international friendly Tuesday as they were beaten 2-0 in the battle of Eagles in Marrakech by Eagles of Mali otherwise called  

Les Aigles or The Eagles.

Recall that the Super Eagles had won the first friendly played last Tuesday against Black Stars of Ghana but Mali proved a hard nut to crack for the Finidi George tutored side.

 The Keneth Omeruo captained side had hardly settled down when the Malians short into the lead in the 18th minute of the match via 22 year old Ivorian born El Bilal who plies his trade with Serie A side Atalanta.

Afterwards the Super Eagles took over proceedings dominating the match with possession in the ratio of 58% to 42%, maintaining the dominance through the second half while hoping to turn the table, but that was not to be as the Malians doubled the lead in the 87th minute thanks to Kamory Doumbia. The Brest midfielder had enjoyed a timely assist from teammate Mamady Diambou and did not hesitate to increase the tally.

Despite dominating possession statistics of the game indicate the Super Eagles recorded no shot on target had five corners none of which was converted.

The Nigerian side however had a cleaner game with half a dozen fouls committed compared to Mali’s 11 fouls. The two friendlies are shape up matches ahead of World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic respectively in June.

South Africa settles for 3-3 draw against Algeria while Benin Republic lost by a lone goal in their own friendlies.

The Super Eagles will host Bafana Bafana in world cup qualifiers on June 2nd and face Benin Republic away on June 9th.
