Int’l School Athletics tourney holds in Lagos March

The maiden International Schools Athletics Championship (ISAC) to be staged by Sports Business Network will hold in March this year at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.

The initiative is a brain child of Olympic gold medalist Aniefiok Udo- Obong in conjunction with Lagos State Athletics Association.

Udo- Obong who won a gold medal in 4×400 meters at Sydney 2000 Olympics said the championship will involve some private schools and some West African countries such as Ghana and Togo while the best public schools in the six education divisions of Lagos will be invited to be part of the event which is for children between the ages of six and seventeen and will hold between March 14 and 19, 2022.

He also announced that registration of schools and individual athletes would close at the end of this month even as he announced there would be prizes for winners.

He said: “I can confirm to you the stage is set. It’s high time we discovered these lads at tender age. We are on the right track to bring the game of athletics back to an enviable height that it used to be in the past.

“The organisers have been doing everything possible to ensure this maiden edition turns successful. I’m using this medium to inspire all participants willing to write their name in gold.

“The tourney will involve some private schools and other West African countries and I’m sure our lads have all it takes to conquer any rival. As I speak, lots of prices will be up for grabs and I will also be on ground to motivate the lads and serve as a role model,” Udo-Obong stated.

Meanwhile, Chairman of Lagos State Athletics Association, Dr. Solomon Alao, has expressed gratitude over the championship and has set aside N5 million for the project.

He described it as a veritable platform through which children will have the opportunity to express their talents and also help in the discovery of talented athletes that will be developed to win laurels for the country in future.
