Iwobi returns to social media after AFCON backlash

Super Eagles star Alex Iwobi has staged a social media comeback after the backlash he received after Nigeria’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final game against Cote d’Ivoire.

Nigeria lost 2-1 to the hosts, triggering a barrage of criticisms against the Fulham star. Iwobi, 27, had then deleted all posts on his Instagram handle but received support from the Federal Government, fellow footballers, and others.

But weeks after, Iwobi returned to the platform, posting a video he captioned, “Lately”.

Intrestingly, the post shared by Iwobi was a compilation of stand-out moments during the 2023 AFCON and latest performances for Premier League club Fulham, including his late winner against Man United in their 2-1 triumph recently.

Iwobi was also heard rapping, saying, “They said I wasn’t good enough, but forgot I was playing in a position I wasn’t used to.”

This could be referring to the defensive role he had to play for the Eagles during the AFCON.

Meanwhile, Iwobi also found time to thank (Frank) Lampard with a line for moving him from the wing to the midfield, saying, “You know me, I got to shout-out Frank (Lampard).. My page was looking blank giving me the licence to perform upon the flanks then he pushed me to the middle and I went up in the banks more inside the tank and there’s so much more to give.”
