JUST IN: Controversial Tunisia vs Mali match under probe

The chaos marred match between Tunisia and Mali is undergoing probe, CAF has revealed. In statement issued by the Continental Football ruling body it said reports of all that transpired in the match which saw referee end the match twice and before regulation time is being garnered and decision will be taken later.

“In relation to the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations match between Tunisia and Mali played in Limbe on 12 January 2022, CAF is gathering all the necessary reports from the officials at the match.

CAF is forwarding these documents to the competent bodies of CAF.

At this stage, CAF is not in a position to make further comment until the responsible bodies indicate the way forward”

The Africa Cup of Nations Group F match between Tunisia and Mali was plunged into chaos on Wednesday after the full-time whistle was blown twice before the 90th minute.

The game itself was a tale of two penalties as Ibrahima Kone converted his attempt after a handball, but Tunisia’s Wahbi Khazri could not follow suit as his effort was saved by Mali goalkeeper Ibrahima Mounkoro 13 minutes from time.

Zambia referee Janny Sikazwe then initially blew for the end of the game with 85 minutes on the clock, his timekeeping obviously letting him down. But after correcting himself he still ended the match in the 90th minute, despite a number of stoppages in the second half, including two VAR checks.

And in a stunning turn of events, almost half an hour after the match ended, Mali returned to the pitch to resume play, only for the officials to opt against restarting the game.
