Kaizer Chiefs look for an option without Nigeria keeper

South Africa giants, Kaizer Chiefs are seriously looking for an option without Nigeria number one goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi, who may not be playing for the club on November 24 when the club file out in an all-important local duel.

Kaizer Chiefs coach, Ernst Middendorp, has discussed the importance of using the FIFA break to study his options ahead of their next match against Maritzburg United.

Chiefs are expected to return to action next Sunday for their Telkom Knockout semi-final against Maritzburg, who will be looking to cause a major upset after eliminating Highlands Park and Bidvest Wits in the previous rounds.

For Amakhosi, it will be a huge test going into battle without the services of two key figures such as Daniel Akpeyi and Erick Mathoho – both of whom are suspended for the clash after picking up a fourth yellow and a red card respectively in their Soweto Derby victory.

But Middendorp has since welcomed the fact that they have had a few extra days to assess their options at cogging those gaps, with some options also away on junior national team duty.

“It’s something we know – the next game against Maritzburg on the 24th of November, Daniel Akpeyi can’t play, so we have to go very clearly into it,” said Middendorp.

“We don’t have Erick Mathoho available, so we have no time to look into it. The first choice could have been Siyabonga Ngezana – unfortunately, he’s sitting somewhere in Egypt to do duties and service [with the under-23 national team].

“That’s definitely something after some days rest that we’ll go into before playing Maritzburg, looking into what their strong side is in terms of the setup and elements, then we’ll try to prepare ourselves to be successful in that game.”
