Katie Taylor ready blockbuster bout against Cameron

Katie Taylor has stolen the headlines this week ahead of her blockbuster homecoming bout on Saturday night and it comes as no surprise considering she’s regarded as the golden girl of Irish boxing.

But Taylor won’t be stepping into the ring alone when she puts her undefeated 22-0 record on the line in Dublin. She will be facing the current light-welterweight champion Chantelle Cameron.

Cameron has held the WBC title since 2020; the IBF and Ring Magazine titles since 2021; and the WBA and WBO titles since November 2022. Cameron also held the IBO female lightweight title from 2017 to 2019.

So technically, on paper, Cameron is actually the reigning champion going into Saturday’s fight. But how does Cameron’s career compare to Taylor and how will she fare against the pioneer of female boxing?

Cameron made her professional debut in 2017 at the age of 26 against Karina Kopinska – winning the six round bout on points.

She then went on to secure her first world title fight three years later against Adriana Araujo for the super-lightweight WBC (vacant) title.

Cameron  who was fighting in her 13th professional fight  won via unanimous decision to become the super-lightweight champion of the world.

The British boxer has continued to thrive since having had four super-lightweight world-title defence fights, all of which she has won.

Some of Cameron’s best fights have been against the likes of Mary McGee, Melissa Hernandez, Victoria Bustos, Viviane Obenauf, Anisha Basheel and Jessica McCaskill.

However, Taylor has said moving up in weight to face Cameron has been ‘psychologically better’ for her as she can ‘eat what she wants’ and ‘focus on the fight’ instead of worrying about making weight.

Nevertheless, Cameron is still the bigger fighter – standing 168 cm tall (5′ 6.14′) with a reach of 168 cm (5′ 6.14′). While Taylor is 165 cm tall (5′ 4.96′) with a reach of 165 cm (5′ 4.96′).
