Kenyatta University to host All-Africa University Games in August

Kenyatta University will host the 10th edition of the All-Africa University Games later this year, organisers have announced.

Around 4,000 athletes from universities across Africa are expected to travel to Kenya’s capital city Nairobi in August for the Games.

Kenyatta University vice-chancellor Paul Wainaina thanked the Federation of Africa University Sport (FASU) for confirming their support.

Wainaina unveiled the logo for the Games and an online registration portal at an event to confirm the organising committee.

“I thank FASU for entrusting our University with the Games,” said Wainaina.

“I urged the Local Organising Committee to deliver the Games at a standard that reflects Kenyatta University’s track record of excellence.”

It will be the third time Kenya has hosted the All-Africa University Games.

Both the 1978 and 2014 Games were held at the University of Nairobi.

The Games are due to take place from August 17 to 21, with 15 sports included on the programme.

The programme also includes swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis and volleyball, as well as both the 3×3 and five-a-side versions of basketball.

Organisers have been permitted to include rollerball, snooker and woodball as demonstration events at the Games.

Woodball sees athletes use a mallet to pass a ball through gates, with the event played on a variety of surfaces including grass and sand.

International University Sports Federation (FISU) vice-president and FASU secretary general Peninnah Kabenge was present at the launch event.

Kabenge claimed the Games offered athletes the chance to represent Africa in the FISU University World Cup football and 3×3 basketball events.

A pre-event scientific conference and head of delegation meeting is set to take place in July at Kenyatta

University prior to the Games.
