Kompany makes Man City admission ahead of Burnley EPL opener

Vincent Kompany believes Burnley’s Premier League curtain raiser against Manchester City is the ‘perfect’ start for the new top flight campaign.

The Clarets are back in the top tier of English football after just one season away. Kompany masterminded the Turf Moor side’s promotion out of the Championship as they won the second tier title by 10 points.

It was a vastly successful season for his old club City too, with Pep Guardiola’s side securing the Treble. Their fifth Premier League title in six years was soon followed by winning the FA Cup and Champions League.

Though not the first time Kompany has pitted his managerial wits against his old boss Guardiola, the Clarets boss will host his former side at Turf Moor as the first game of the 2023/24 campaign. The encounter at 8pm on Friday, August 11, will be broadcast live on Sky Sports.

And Kompany believes the first game of the new season is the ‘perfect curtain raiser’ as the sides which won the Premier League and Championship last campaign face off. But he has vowed that his side will be aiming to pick up where they left off last season when they take on City.

Speaking to Burnley’s club website, Kompany said: “We all know every match this season is massive but for the reigning champions of the Championship to face the Premier League champions feels like the perfect curtain raiser!

“We aim to continue this season as we finished the last – doing everything we can to make our fans happy. It’s great we can start the Premier League campaign in front of our own fans with a home match.

“Burnley supporters helped make Turf Moor a fortress last season and we’ll look to them this season to continue that.”
