Leicester City to face Man City in Community Shield

Leicester City are set for another trip to Wembley after booking their place in the 2021 Community Shield.

Leicester secured their spot in the annual season curtain-raiser by winning the FA Cup for the first time in their history over the weekend.

A stunning strike from Youri Tielemans gave the Foxes a famous 1-0 victory over Chelsea in Saturday’s Wembley final.

That result means Brendan Rodgers’ men will now take on Premier League champions Manchester City in the next edition of the Community Shield.

Man City were crowned champions last week after Leicester beat Manchester United 2-1 at Old Trafford.

With two rounds of fixtures remaining, Pep Guardiola’s side are 13 points clear of United at the top of the table.

Leicester are third as they, Chelsea and Liverpool battle it out for the two remaining Champions League spots.

The Foxes take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night before rounding off their campaign at home to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, May 23.

The Foxes also appeared in the 1971 version of the event, then known as the Charity Shield.

They were invited to take part as second division champions due to double winners Arsenal being unavailable.

Leicester took on FA Cup runners-up Liverpool at Filbert Street and won 1-0, courtesy of a goal from Steve Whitworth.

Man City have won the Community Shield on six previous occasions.

Last season’s fixture was won by Arsenal, who beat Liverpool 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

The venue, date and kick-off time for the 2021 Community Shield is yet to be confirmed but it is expected to take place at Wembley on Saturday, August 7 – a week before the new season gets under way.

Fans will also be waiting to find out what sort of crowd will be allowed to attend.

Spectators are gradually returning to stadiums in line with the lifting of coronavirus restrictions.

Saturday’s FA Cup final was played in front of around 21,000 people after being picked as a test event.

And a limited number of supporters will be permitted to attend the final two rounds of Premier League games this season.
