Lewis Hamilton breaks F1 record with 92nd Grand Prix win

 

Lewis Hamilton has surpassed one of Michael Schumacher’s long-standing records by winning his 92nd Grand Prix at the Algarve International Circuit in Portugal on Sunday afternoon

The Mercedes star stood in the centre of the podium for the 92nd time at the Algarve International Circuit in thus surpassing Schumacher’s total of 91.

Schumacher’s total came from 308 race entires between 1991 and 2012, a percentage of 29.55.

Hamilton’s total has come from only 262 entires, which is an improved percentage of 35.11.

Despite the obvious size of the achievement, Hamilton has insisted that he isn’t out to break all the records set by Schumacher during his two spells an F1 driver.

He said after he matched the Ferrari legend’s total wins in Russia: “I grew up watching Michael win all those grands prix and I couldn’t even fathom equalling him.

“Getting to F1 was the first step of the dream but Michael was just so far ahead, it’s beyond my wildest dreams to be here today having equalled him. I feel really humbled by the moment.”

The pair sit miles clear in the standings ahead of Sebastian Vettel on 53, and Schumacher even hinted during his time in the sport that Hamilton had what it takes to break his totals.

Hamilton, 35, won his first race at the Canadian Grand Prix just one year after Schumacher’s last, but has said in the past that he doesn’t want to be compared to the German legend.

He told Sky Sports in 2018: “Firstly I could never ever personally classify myself as the best. Obviously, within myself, I know my abilities and where I stand.

“But ultimately, my dad always told me, since I was eight years old, he said ‘do your talking on the track’.”

Before adding: ”But Michael’s still quite far ahead in race wins so you have to say he is still the GOAT.”
