‘Lionel Messi is more incredible than Cristiano Ronaldo’

A former Brazil international has put national allegiances aside when it comes to his admiration for Lionel Messi, whom he claims is a more incredible footballer than long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ex-Selecao midfielder Felipe Melo, who was part of the nation’s 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup-winning squad, recently took part in an interview with Clarin, during which he singled Messi out as the world’s best player ahead of Ronaldo.

“Messi is incredible, more so than Cristiano Ronaldo,” Melo said during the interview, as reported by Marca.

“Cristiano can score five goals for you, but Messi can score those five and then make his teammates score as well. He’s more complete.”

Melo also revealed that when he and Brazil came up against Messi and Argentina, the Selecao players would take turns to “kick” the 32-year-old as a strategy to try and disrupt his natural style of play.

In December last year, Messi won a record sixth Ballon d’Or crown to move one title ahead of Ronaldo, who is the only other player to have won the award at least five times.
