Liverpool, Egypt still sweating on Salah’s AFCON participation

Liverpool still don’t know whether top scorer Mohamed Salah will link up with the Egypt national team before the turn of the year.

The African Cup of Nations begins on January 9.

FIFA regulations mean players called up for the tournament should be made available 14 days before the start of the tournament.

Salah would then be required to join Egypt after the Boxing Day match against Leeds United.

Jurgen Klopp has revealed talks are ongoing to let Salah – as well as Sadio Mane and Naby Keita – to stay a bit longer.

However, authorities from Egypt have confirmed a decision is yet to be made.

“We already received the request. It is still under consideration, and no answer has been given yet,” Osama Ismail, spokesman for the Egyptian Football Association, told Ahram Online.

The Merseyside club are due to take on Leicester City on December 28, with a top-of-the-table clash with Chelsea scheduled for January 2.
