Lookman sends defiant message after shocking West Ham penalty miss

Ademola Lookman has said he’s happy to keep taking penalties despite his horror miss from the spot in injury-time that cost Fulham a point in Saturday night’s derby at West Ham.

The game looked to be heading for stalemate with the score still 0-0 with 90 minutes up.

But Fulham’s hard work appeared to have been undone when West Ham took the lead two minutes into injury-time.

However, there was another late twist when Fulham were awarded a spot-kick four minutes later when Said Benrahma tripped Tom Cairney.

After a VAR check, Fulham were given a penalty and Lookman had a golden chance to rescue a point.

He gambled though. Trying to fool the goalkeeper with a Panenka-style penalty, it went horribly wrong as his kick floated tamely into the hands of Hammers goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.

It condemned Fulham to defeat and Lookman cut a crushed figure when the whistle blew for full-time shortly after.

He later took to Twitter to accept the blame.

He tweeted: “After the mistake, I take full responsibility and onus for it.

“To my team-mates, manager and the supporters I vow to put the next one in. I will not let one failure hold me back.”

Fulham boss, Scott Parker, was fuming in the immediate aftermath.

He said: “I’m not going to shirk away from the penalty miss, I’m angry, and he [Lookman] is as well. You can miss a penalty, but you can’t miss a penalty like that!”

But he also added a more measured take.

Parker reflected: “He’ll bounce back. He’ll bounce back well. I know he will. He is an unbelievable character. A great professional, wants to learn. And he’s made a little bit of a mistake.

“So yeah, he’ll bounce back. The team will get around him. The team have let him know, I’ve let him know. And we move on now.

“On Saturday it was Ade. Two weeks ago, it was someone else, another individual. And this is part and parcel of the process.

“It’s a young team, young players who are learning and this is what happens. Like I keep saying you need to learn quickly from these moments and keep improving.”

The defeat was Fulham’s 13th straight loss in a Premier League London derby.

The Cottagers ended Saturday night in 17th place, having managed just four points from their opening eight games.
