Man City 6-1 Southampton: Citizens Return to Top of Premier League

Manchester City have defeated Southampton 6-1 at the Etihad Stadium to move back above Liverpool at the top of the Premier League.

The Citizens had their ninth top-flight win of the season wrapped up with less than a quarter of the game played, finding themselves three goals to the good through a Wesley Hoedt own goal and strikes from Sergio Aguero and David Silva.

Raheem Sterling scored two and set up three more as Manchester City let rip on Southampton. City needed a little over five minutes to open the scoring after Southampton failed to clear their lines.

It came as an own goal as Wesley Hoedt tried to cut out Leroy Sane’s cross in the direction of Raheem Sterling. It was 2-0 in the 12th minute as City punished more hesitant defending. Sterling drove at goal and pulled three Saints defenders with him before his low cross was lashed home by Aguero.

It was the Argentinian’s 150th Premier League goal for City, putting him joint-eighth alongside Michael Owen in the league’s scoring charts. It was quickly becoming a rout as David Silva made it 3-0 in the 18th minute smashing a shot into the roof of the net at the far post after Jack Stephens got a touch to Sterling’s cross to keep it off the head of Sane.

Danny Ings scored what was already a consolation from the penalty spot as Sterling restored City’s three-goal advantage in first-half stoppage time. Aguero did well to keep the ball in before rolling it across the area. Sterling’s first touch was far from what he intended but his second found the net.

Just after the hour mark, Sane rattled the post with a powerful curling effort from the right of the area, with Alex McCarthy well beaten. The fifth goal was coming and it duly arrived in the 67th minute. Aguero slipped the ball into the path of Sterling on the right of the area, and he drilled the ball under McCarthy for his second of the match.

Leroy Sane made it six in stoppage to complete a stunning performance.
