Man U midfielder Pereira seals loan move to Flamengo

Man United midfielder Andreas Pereira has joined Brazilian side Flamengo on a season-long loan, the club have confirmed.

Pereira signed for Man United in 2011 from Dutch side PSV. He spent a few years in their academy before he made his senior debut in 2014.

The Brazillian had loan spells in La Liga with Granada and Valencia between 2016 and 2018.

Pereira returned to United ahead of the 2018/19 season. He featured 62 times for them across all competitions but he left on loan again last term.

With first-team opportunities hard to come by, he spent the 2019/20 campaign at Lazio.

The Red Devils announced on Friday that the 25-year-old had joined Flamengo on loan. During the statement, they cited competition for places as being the reason for his departure:

“Our former youth-team player returned to the club in the summer and performed well throughout pre-season.

“Andreas netted a stunning goal in the friendly against Brentford at Old Trafford, highlighting his undoubted ability in the attacking third.

“With so much competition for places at Old Trafford, particularly in the forward positions, the decision was taken for Andreas to join Flamengo this season.

“The Rio de Janeiro club lifted the Brazilian Serie A trophy in 2019 and 2020 and are bidding to win a second Copa Libertadores title in three years.

“Everybody at United wishes him well for the campaign ahead.”
