Man United, City to miss start of new Premier League season

Manchester United and neighbours City are both set to miss the start of the new Premier League season after reaching the latter stages of European competition this month, according to reports.

The Times say it was agreed at a Premier League shareholders meeting earlier this month that teams must be given at least a 30-day break between this coming season and the end of the 2019-20 campaign.

City’s season was brought to an end at the quarter-final stage of the Champions League on Saturday evening, while Manchester United were sent packing by Sevilla in the last four of the Europa League 24 hours later.

It means both clubs are set to play their opening Premier League fixtures in the week following September 12, when the top flight is scheduled to return.

Unless they are paired with one of the Manchester clubs on the opening weekend, Wolves, who were knocked out of the Europa League at the last-eight stage, will start their top flight campaign on time. That defeat on August 11 came 32 days before the planned start of the 2020-21 season.

The fixtures are expected to be announced before the end of the week.
