Materazzi: ‘Italians must kiss the ground I walk for what I did to Zidane’

Marco Materazzi recalled the infamous episode from the World Cup 2006 final.

He told Nivdanny Football: “I was holding his shirt and he told me if need it, I can take it after the game. I said I preferred his sister.”

“What angered me the most is how the French supported Zidane but the Italians judged me. They must kiss the ground I walk for what I did.

“I scored the most important goal in the World Cup final and forced France’s leader off. Instead of gratitude I received a barrage of criticism.”

In the extra times, Zidane headbutted Materazzi for the reason stated above. The game went on to the penalty shootout where Italy won, David Trezeguet missing the only pen.

Curiously, both Zidane and Materazzi scored in normal time.
