Mikel shines as Chelsea thrash Bayern in legends match

Former Nigeria international Mikel Obi featured for Chelsea Legends in their 4-0 win over Bayern Munich Legends in a charity game played at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.

Chelsea Legends coach Roberto Di Matteo named nine members of Chelsea’s 2012 Champions League-winning squad in his starting lineup.

In a 4-3-3 formation, the former Super Eagles captain started at the base of midfield with Michael Essien and Jody Morris playing ahead of him, and he impressed, helping the Londoners to a clean sheet.

Former Ghanaian star Essien opened the scoring for the Blues from Ramires’ cross in the 23rd minute.

John Terry doubled the lead of the two-time European champions from Florent Malouda’s pass three minutes later.

Gary Cahill scored to make it 3-0 after an assist from Gianfranco Zola just before the hour mark and Tiago Mendes wrapped up the scoring in injury time for the Blues

Mikel played for the six-time English champions between 2006 and 2017, recording 372 appearances in all competitions.
