Milan’s new 65,000-seat stadium to be nicknamed ‘The Cattedrale’

 

AC Milan and Inter Milan have chosen the design of the Cattedrale of Populous for their new stadium, which will replace the iconic Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, also known as San Siro.

The two European giants were presented with a number of options but chose to follow Populous’s proposal, and the new site will be nicknamed ‘The Cathedral’ after being inspired by the Duomo cathedral.

The cathedral has been designed to create a unique home for the fans and supporters of AC Milan and FC Internazionale Milano, with bespoke installations that dramatically change the look of the architecture and incorporate the clubs unique identity into the building fabric. .

“For Inter Milan, a coiled viper of blue light wraps around the stadium; while for AC Milan, the vertical buttresses glow a smoldering red from the depths of the building.’

First officially opened in 1926, the San Siro has hosted some of the greatest football matches, including matches at World Cups, European Championships and the Champions League final.

However, there has been talk of its demolition for some time and both clubs in Milan were given permission last year to set the wheels in motion for a new site to be built.

The venue will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2026, when Milan hosts the Winter Olympics in February and March.

It will then be demolished and replaced by the new 65,000-seat stadium in 2027.
