Mourinho aims dig at Tottenham over Kane trophy hopes

Jose Mourinho believes that Harry Kane will be driven to lead England to glory at Euro 2020… because he is not winning any trophies with Tottenham.

Kane enjoyed another impressive season personally, winning the Premier League Golden Boot and being named in the PFA Team of the Season – but still came up empty-handed with Spurs.

Mourinho was sacked six days before the Carabao Cup Final, with interim coach Ryan Mason overseeing a 1-0 defeat to Manchester City at Wembley.

Spurs ended up qualifying for the UEFA Europa Conference League, and Kane is determined to push through a transfer this summer with the likes of Manchester United, Man City and Chelsea all interested.

Antonio Conte is in talks with Spurs to become their new manager, but it remains to be seen whether the former Inter Milan coach’s potential arrival could tempt Kane to remain in north London – though any questions regarding his future are set to wait until after the Euros.

With Kane desperate for team silverware, his former boss Mourinho – who will coach AS Roma from next season – believes a lack of trophies at Spurs could actually work in England’s favour this summer.

“Harry is the one that has on his shoulders a lot,” Mourinho told The Sun.

“The country expects a lot from him. He expects a lot from himself.

“He’s the captain and he wants to win something.

“He’s not doing that with the club, so, of course, he’s going to try everything he can to do it with the Three Lions.”

Mourinho added of England’s tournament hopes: “This is a generation full of good players, even the young players.

“The squad is amazing. England has to go with everything.

“The group phase is at home; the semi-finals and final is at home.

“It has to be now, because [the World Cup] was in 1966. I think they have to push with everything.”
