Mourinho likens Son to Ronaldo after Spurs victory

Jose Mourinho has likened Son Heung-min’s stunning solo goal to Ronaldo’s famous strike for Barcelona against Compostela.

South Korean forward Son picked up the ball on the edge of his own box before running to the edge of the Tottenham half – during their annihilation of Burnley on Saturday.

At which point he used his nous to beat seven players with two touches which put him clean through on goal – where he coolly slotted past Nick Pope.

It was quickly branded the goal of the season by Gary Lineker in a tweet: “Wow. Son has just scored one of the greatest individual goals you’re ever likely to see. Goal of the season, me thinks.”

But it was Mourinho who had the greatest piece of praise for Son.

The Portuguese was part of Bobby Robson’s backroom staff at the Nou Camp in the 1990s and witnessed the Brazilian Ronaldo run circles around Compostela in 2996 – in one of the greatest goals of all time.

“Even before the goal, my son calls him Sonaldo after Ronaldo Luis Nazario,” Mourinho said.

“The only thing that comes to my mind is the goal when I had the honour of being next to Sir Bobby Robson in 1996 when Ronaldo scored a wonderful goal.

“From the outside I had a feeling. I remember speaking to Sir Alex about Ji Sung Park. Maybe it’s a cultural thing. They’re very coachable. The kid is fantastic. I’m very happy, so happy.”

Son was also impressed with his own skill, and explained what was going through his head during the incredible goal.
