Mourinho made the gesture after hearing that John Kessler, an avid supporter of the north Londoners, had become seriously unwell.

And the Portuguese’s letter “meant the world” to Kessler, according to the fan’s friend who praised Mourinho on social media.

He wrote: “Want to say a massive thank you to Spurs and Jose Mourinho, who within days of taking the job at Spurs sent this letter to a friend of mine who sadly fell very ill.

“This letter means the world him and speaks volumes of Mourinho and the club. Class touch.”

“I should like to take this opportunity to send you my best wishes on behalf of all the staff and players at the club. We hope that you are managing to keep your spirits up and want you to know that we’re all behind you!

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued and much appreciated support of the club.

“Kind Regards, Jose Mourinho.”

A much-changed Spurs side closed their Group B campaign with a 3-1 loss at Bayern Munich on Wednesday night in a game where nothing was at stake.

Mourinho’s men will now face Barcelona , Juventus , Paris Saint-Germain, Valencia or RB Leipzig in the next round, with the draw on Monday.

Ryan Sessegnon, Giovani Lo Celso, Juan Foyth and Kyle Walker-Peters all made their first starts under the new boss and it was Sessegnon who impressed the most, scoring Spurs’ goal.

They ultimately went down to a 3-1 loss, with Kingsley Coman, Thomas Muller and Philippe Coutinho scoring for Bayern.
