Napoli captain Lorenzo in no hurry to sign new deal

Napoli captain Lorenzo Insigne has admitted he is not in a rush to sign a new deal with the Serie A club, suggesting ‘there is time’ to agree a contract extension.

The 30-year-old is under contract with the Partenopei until next summer but hinted negotiations over a new deal haven’t started yet.

‘I only think about playing and about what happens on the pitch,’ Insigne told Sky Sport Italia.

‘I always put the team in front, I always work hard and I always arrive with a smile. I don’t think about the contract, there’s time to discuss with the club.

‘My agent and the club will take care of it, I still have one year.’

Should Insigne fail to reach an agreement with Napoli, he would be able to sign a pre-contract with another club by January 2022.

The news will put a number of Premier League clubs on alert, chief among them Tottenham, who have long been admirers of the Italy international.

Back in July, Corriere dello Sport reported Spurs had made an ‘important’ offer after making contact with the player’s agent.

Paolo Paganini, a journalist for Italy’s state-owned broadcaster RAI, confirmed Tottenham had put together arguably the most financially convincing offer for the player.

‘The most important offers have come from abroad, especially from Tottenham. After the Euros, Lorenzo has many new admirers,’ he told the Radio Goal show on Naples-based Radio Kiss Kiss.

Insigne, however, ultimately opted to remain with Napoli, the club with which he has spent the entirety of his career bar for two loan spells at Pescara and Foggia.
