Navas, Costa Rica teammates accused of deliberately losing matches

A defamation trial involved former Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas was held on Monday, March 15.

Keylor, Bryan Ruiz and Celso Borges have taken a case against the Costa Rican Football Federation’s – FECODA – former directors.

The players were accused of plotting to deliberately lose matches in order to force the sacking of ex-coach Jorge Luis Pinto.

Former FECODA president Eduardo Li appeared at the trial and explained that Luis Pinto had a clause in his contract that could see him dismissed if he were to lose three games in a row.

“The players knew about the clause,” Li said. “Keylor Navas was the one who said ‘let’s lose the three games’.”
