Neville’s theory on why Man Utd will not sack Solskjaer before January

Gary Neville reckons Manchester United won’t sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, because Ed Woodward won’t want his final act as CEO to be firing a manager.

Solskjaer, 48, is once again under intense pressure at Old Trafford after his side were outclassed by Manchester City on Saturday.

Roy Keane laid into his former side after the 2-0 defeat, claiming they had ‘no fight’.

But despite some calls for him to go Neville believes that Solskjaer’s job could be saved by Woodward’s upcoming departure.

He tweeted: “The situation at United is made more complicated with Ed W leaving in weeks .

“He gave OGS a 3 year contract months ago and he won’t want his final act to be sacking a manager.”

Although, Neville did also see a reason Woodward might want to fire Solskjaer.

He added: “He [Woodward] knows an incoming CEO could throw him overboard by doing just that [sacking Solskjaer] and blaming him!”

Woodward announced that he would be leaving Man United at the end of this year, in the wake of the European Super League scandal back in April.

The Red Devils then handed Solskjaer a new three-year contract in July.

Antonio Conte was heavily linked with the United job after their 5-0 defeat to Liverpool a fortnight ago.

But Neville believes that a move for the Italian was never on the table, even prior to his move to Tottenham.

He said: “Ole is under massive pressure and they have no courage. Without [Edinson] Cavani they look less of a team he seems to have that fight to play for the club and when he doesn’t play they seem nice, and nice isn’t good enough.

“Up until the end of last season there was progression and finishing above Liverpool last season they’d snatch your hand off. The club has not planned for this.

They were never going to appoint Conte; it was never going to happen, they were never going to consider it.

“Some fans think that the club should’ve acted two weeks ago because Conte was available.

“They were never going to appoint Conte; it was never going to happen, they were never going to consider it.”

Despite United’s poor display yesterday, former midfielder Paul Scholes doesn’t feel they are far off Chelsea’s level.

But Danny Murphy believes that United’s situation is a bleak one, and that they must sack Solskjaer.
