‘New Club World Cup will be the best competition’

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the Club World Cup will keep the same format for at least one more year but will be expanded as soon as possible.

The Club World Cup is going through changes, as FIFA plans to expand the competition to 24 teams, but the coronavirus outbreak and the tight schedule means there’s no room for change in 2021.

The 2020 Club World Cup was postponed due to COVID-19 and will take place in Qatar next year, between February 1 and 11.

Then, the 2021 Club World Cup will be held in Japan in December the same year, and both will keep the number of six or seven participants.

But Infantino said the competition could then change as soon as possible and aims to hold the first 24-team competition in China.

“It will be held in China,” Infantino said at a press conference. “We haven’t set the dates yet, but it will be the best club competition in the world.”
