Newcastle to end striker’s rot with Real Madrid swoop

Newcastle are considering a loan move for Real Madrid striker Luka Jovic to put an end to their current struggle for goals up top, according to a report.

The Magpies spent big on Joelinton and brought Andy Carroll back to the club from West Ham last summer.

However, the pair – along with Dwight Gayle and Yoshinori Muto – have only managed five Premier League goals between them this season.

Indeed, Jonjo Shelvey is their top scorer in the league while Miguel Almiron, with eight, has the most goals overall.

As such, the Shields Gazzette claims Newcastle are looking at Jovic to put an end to their problems.

The Serbia international moved to Madrid from Eintracht Frankfurt last summer but has struggled to settle. Amid a tussle for starts, he has only scored two goals in 26 appearances.

Jovic, though, has had to watch on for large parts, with Zinedine Zidane picking the likes Karim Benzema and Rodrygo.

Nevertheless, Magpies scouts believe the potential is there to be exploited, potentially at St James’ Park next season.

What’s more, Newcastle officials have told Bruce that he must prepare for a transfer window without the added investment a successful takeover would bring.

The proposed takeover by a Saudi-backed consortium has continued to hit roadblocks in recent weeks. The Premier League are yet to make a final decision on whether to sanction the move.

Bruce, meanwhile, said last weekend that he could look to sign another striker before next season.

“” I’ve always said with Joelinton, I think he’s better playing to a side, that suits him, so it’s quite possible that a centre-forward could be on the list, yeah,” he said (via the Shields Gazzette).

He also claimed ahead of that match that the impact of the coronavirus pandemic will hamper his side’s budget.

Newcastle finish their season on Sunday by hosting champions Liverpool. The Magpies will finish in at least 14th regardless of other results if they lose.
