No live telecast of all-Korean World Cup qualifier for South Korean fans

Attempts to secure live television broadcasts of the first football match between North and South Korea in Pyongyang for 29 years have failed, three South Korean broadcasters said on Monday.

The broadcasters — KBS, MBC and SBS — said they had received no response from the North Korean side over TV coverage.

No South Korean reporters have been permitted to travel to the North Korean capital, it was also confirmed.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier takes place on Tuesday in the Kim Il Sung Stadium in the North Korean capital.

The unification ministry in Seoul had on Friday spoken of “disappointment’’ over the lack of communication regarding organisation around the match.

Seoul made various enquiries regarding travel for fans, journalists and camera teams.

“There is however no answer yet,” a ministry spokesperson had also said on Friday.

Every visit from a South Korean to North Korea must be approved by the government.

Both states remain officially in conflict following the 1950-1953 Korean war.

South Korea are clear favourites in Group H of the second Asian qualifying round for 2022.
