Osaka: US Open title was more unreal than the Australian Open

Naomi Osaka believes that her wins at the US Open and Australian Open are different.

In an interview after triumphing in Melbourne, the Japanese player said: “This feels more like I’m used to it now.

“I know that sounds a bit strange because this is only the second one but the first time I won it definitely felt a bit more unreal. It (Australian Open) means a lot. I think moments like this are what you train for as a little kid to play the Grand Slams.

“To win another one is definitely a dream come true.” Osaka feels she doesn’t have too much time to rest: “The way the tennis world is, there’s always the next tournament, the next Slam, and we all just want to keep training hard and winning more.

“So, I’m not really sure if I’m satisfied.” What about winning four Majors in a row? “I’m not going to lie and say that thought hasn’t crossed my mind. But I don’t know. For me, I just have to take it one tournament at a time, especially Indian Wells is coming up and I won that tournament last year.

“I feel like I have to think about that.” Asked if she felt more grown-up after her successes, Osaka replied: “I’m not sure if it’s feeling grown up or being able to dissociate my feelings. I don’t know if that makes sense.

“Like, you know how some people get worked up about things? That’s a very human thing to do. Sometimes, I don’t know, like I feel like I don’t want to waste my energy doing stuff like that. I think about this on the court, too.

“Like in the third set of my match today, I literally just tried to turn off all my feelings. So that’s why I wasn’t yelling as much in the third set. I’m not sure if that makes me grown up. I don’t think so.”
