Oscar De La Hoya planning to call out Mayweather for mega-fight

Oscar De La Hoya is planning to call out long-time rival and former opponent Floyd Mayweather after his comeback fight against former UFC champion Vitor Belfort, set for September this year.

De La Hoya, now 48, has been teasing his comeback for several years and confirmed earlier this year that he would be making his return to the boxing ring in September.

Since, Golden Boy has confirmed that he will face former UFC champion Vitor Belfort in an exhibition clash set to be promoted by social media giant Triller.

Belfort, who became UFC light heavyweight champion in 2004 after knocking out Randy Couture, is 4 years De La Hoya’s junior and boasts an MMA record of 26-14 with 1 no contest.

And while the Brazilian is clearly a challenging opponent for De La Hoya, it appears the Mexican is already looking past Belfort towards a potential showdown with former opponent Floyd Mayweather.

Last Saturday on DAZN, De La Hoya announced his comeback fight and revealed his plans for what’s next after the Belfort bout.

“I think Floyd after that exhibition he did with Logan [Paul], I think Floyd has, I think he feels like he has to prove something once again inside the boxing ring.

“So, look, if I come out okay, my body feels great. I’m telling you, my jab feels faster than ever. I think it’s the 15 years I didn’t use it. If I feel good these next two fights that I have, I’m going to call out Floyd.”

De La Hoya and Mayweather faced off back in 2007, in what would be the latter’s first fight to do over a million pay-per-view buys and somewhat of a coming out party for the American. Mayweather would win the bout via split decision, with the fight likely more one-sided than the scorecards show.
