Peseiro reveals role players played in contract extension

Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro has revealed players forced him to stay put after asking him to accept a pay cut from Nigeria Football Federation.

Recalled Peseiro extended his contract with cash trapped Nigeria Football Federation in July after the initial agreement expired in May.

The new deal saw the Portuguese reduced his $70 monthly salary to $50 and will guard the team to next year’s African Cup of Nations in Cote D’Ivoire.

Peseiro says he’s desperate to win with the the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote D’Ivoire.

“The players pushed me to stay because they believe we can win (the AFCON),” he told Sky Sports.

“We can win it. The players know it. They come with the same energy, the same belief, to fight for the Super Eagles.”

Peseiro however admitted the eagles must conquer other teams to win the tournament.

“The main goal is to win the AFCON,” he added.

“We will need to be at our maximum because we know that there is good opposition. There is Senegal, Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Ghana and Ivory Coast. But we believe we can do it. I believe. And the players believe.”

The three time African Cup of Nations winner will face Cote d’Ivoire and Guinea-Bissau on January 18 and January 22 respectively.
