Porto confirm £34m Fabio Vieira move to Arsenal

Arsenal have officially completed the signing of Porto midfielder Fabio Vieira, the Portuguese club confirmed.

A statement from Porto released on Friday morning announced that the deal was worth a total of €40m, with €5m of that held back in add-ons that depend on certain future clauses being met.

Arsenal have yet to announce the signing themselves, with Vieira having arrived in north London yesterday after cutting short his holiday on the Greek island of Mykonos to undergo a medical and complete the formalities behind a move to English football.

The 22-year-old becomes the first major new arrival at Emirates Stadium this summer, following young Brazilian winger Marquinhos – who joined last week for a £3m fee  and USA goalkeeper Matt Turner, who is due to arrive in the UK later this month.

Vieira offers plenty of versaility as he can operate either as a No8 or No10, while also capable of being deployed in wide positions.

He was also linked with Tottenham and Manchester United after notching the most assists in the Primeira Liga last term as Porto clinched their 30th title, while he picked up player of the tournament honours at last summer’s European Under-21 Championship held in Hungary and Slovenia.

It is understood that the deal for Vieira will not affect Arsenal’s pursuit of Belgium international Youri Tielemans, who wants to leave Leicester in this transfer window.

Arsenal have been tracking the Belgian since January and he is keen on a move, despite originally expressing a desire to play in the Champions League.
